I am an independent journalist whose work appears in Agence France-Presse, the Globe and Mail, the New York Times, Time magazine and other publications.
A generalist with special interests in civility, our environment and broadly-defined social policy, I have made my living by writing for more than 25 years. I am Canadian, and now live on Canada’s West Coast with my husband and our family.
While I have chosen to work mostly for myself, I have also been fortunate in several notable job experiences. I began journalism at the Yellowknifer newspaper in Canada’s far north, where opportunities were as boundless as an Arctic sky. I worked for two years as a desker at the Halifax bureau of the Canadian Press news service, and served as a long-time Contributing Editor at Chatelaine magazine and the Globe and Mail's Report on Business Magazine. At the Vancouver Sun I was a member of the editorial board and, for 2 1/2 years, an opinion columnist on the Saturday op-ed page.
Lifelong continuing education includes formal studies of biological science, political science and economics, and I am currently working toward a master’s degree in Graduate Liberal Studies at Simon Fraser University. My life and my perspective on journalism are enhanced by ensuring that family and friends are priorities, and are informed by eclectic interests from photography to gardening; good food to reading; mountain biking to film; martial arts and yoga to alpine skiing. Other contributing experiences include ski instructing in Whistler and early work as an assistant park naturalist, assistant museum curator, flight attendant and beer slinger. My volunteerism mostly focuses on journalism advocacy, as a co-founder of Canadian Journalist.
